Science 8: Species at Risk

You will be using the Species at Risk web site to locate the information that you need for this project.

Select the type of species that you are interested in by clicking on the button next to the organism type.
Or select All to find all the species listed.
Don't be afraid to try some of the less popular organisms like mollusca, plants, or lichens. These can be very interesting and make great drawings.
Under Distribution select British Columbia.
Click on Search.
Select a species name from the list.
When you have decided on a species add it to the teacher's master list.
Each student will select a different species.
Take notes on your species.
You should look at other sources besides the web site. These sources include animal encyclopedias and books.
Use the Library Catalogue to find books.
Be sure to search under Subject Browse.

you have a separate comic strip for each type of star (low mass, high mass, and very high mass)
you show what happens during each stage of the star's life, from formation to "death" (include information on mass, colour, and how long each stage lasts)
your comic strip should be in colour

Assignment 1

In your group of 3 or 4, create a file of species in the following categories:

native to camosun bog
invasive species of plants.

For each species, include the following:

a clear picture that will help you recognize the plant
include the Latin name of the plant
a description of the abiotic factors preferred by this plant: dry, wet, acid, basic, low nutrient, high nutrient
a description of the plant itself: relative size of leaves, flowers, when does it flower? Is it a bryophyte, or a Gymnosperm or and angiosperm?

Evaluation: Included at least 5 species in each category: 5 marks
Included all the information required: 3 marks per category

Total: 15 marks.
